What is Chiropractic?

The Chiropractors job is to find and correct a condition known as a Subluxation.  Simply put, a subluxation is a condition where the spinal bones are not in their correct position, or proper alignment, and where they don’t move freely through their normal range of motion.  Subluxations can cause a variety of symptoms.  Obviously, pain anywhere in the spine is the most common symptom.  What most people don’t realize is that many other symptoms respond to correcting a subluxation.  A few examples include:
                Headache
Numbness or Tingling in the arms or legs
                 Sciatica (Pain radiating down leg)
                 Fibromyalgia
                 Jaw pain
                 Dizziness and Vertigo
                 Migraines
                 Carpal Tunnel
                Trigeminal Neuralgia

Even though as a Chiropractor I focus on correcting subluxations that affect pain, I find that many of our patients notice other health conditions improving after they have been adjusted for awhile.  I believe that there is a direct connection between general health & wellness and being subluxation free.  This could also explain why studies have shown that people who receive regular Chiropractic care spend a significant amount less per year on total health care than people who don’t.

Subluxations and Nerves

Did you know that the nervous system controls everything in your body?  Here is a description of the nervous system from Gray’s Anatomy, “The nervous system consists of the central nervous system, which is composed of the brain and the spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system which is composed of nerves and ganglia.”  The next line is what we need to pay attention to.  It says, “Its function is to control and coordinate all the other organs and structures, and to relate the individual to his environment.”  This is saying something profound.  The function and purpose of the nervous system is to control everything in the body.

Could that mean that if I get adjusted regularly I may be generally healthier?  That’s what the studies suggest.  That’s good news because in general an initial diagnostic workup and treatment plan at most chiropractic offices will cost less than just the initial diagnostic workup and no treatment at most medical facilities.  In addition, Chiropractic gets at the root cause of many conditions, rather than covering up pain with medicines which can prolong the condition.  Short term use of medication may be indicated but as a long term answer for many of these conditions can be habit forming and dangerous.
